Review Of The Kona Dew Range Of Street Hybrid Bikes
All the models in the Kona Dew range represent good value street hybrid bikes, from a well-respected manufacturer, with tons of style.
They are hybrids that are principally directed towards street riding - to work and back say. However like any good hybrid they will also take you out on the lanes at the weekend. What exactly do the various models have to offer?
All have frames constructed from Kona's 7005 aluminium. The sloping top tube has two advantages - a safe standover clearance and all models are unisex. The frame geometry does vary between models though. They all have fittings for mudguards though - essential in a commuting bike.
They all run on 700 mm road (rather than MTB) wheels, and all except the FS suspension model carry Kona’s own Project Two aluminium fork. All are fitted with triple chainsets - good for flexibility and ease on hills and for distances.
Apart from the features in common, the different models show improvements in gears, brakes and wheelsets as you go up the range.
The Kona Dew City is the entry-level bike of the range.
- Twenty-one gears in three ranges. Shimano EZFire gear shifters.
- Powerful and simple Tektro V-brakes.
- Comfort saddle, 35 mm tyres and flat pedals all make for a practical, no-nonsense bike.
- Priced very competitively.
Next in the range is the Kona Dew. In many respects it's the same as the Dew City. However there are
- 24 gears from three ranges with slightly increased ratio spreads.
- Slight upgrades to the front derailleur and the wheel rims.
- More heavy-duty V-brakes, although still Tektro.
- A really nice practical and stylish bike.
Next up the range is the Kona Dew Plus. The main upgrade to this model is in the brakes.
- Shimano hydraulic disc system for increased power and weather performance.
- Improved rear derailleur to Shimano Deore for more smoothness and reliability.
Moving up the range we come to the Kona Dew Deluxe.
- The upgrade to a 9-speed cassette now gives you 27 gears.
- Upgrades to the quality of the front derailleur, the shifters, the rims and the brakes.
- A major change to the frame which now has a beautiful taper to the top tube.
- More road-friendly 32 mm tyres. Maybe less ability off the road though.
The Kona Dew FS is the only suspension model in the Dew range.
- The front fork is changed to a Suntour suspension unit, great for smoothing out the ruts.
- There is more help with ride smoothness from the suspension seatpost.
- The frame is modified as well, with even more slope given to the top tube.
- More help on the hills from smaller chainrings.
- Upgraded front gear mech for smoother shifting between chainrings
- A bike with suspension for a very competitive price.
The Kona Dr Dew is a bike designed with no compromise for fast street riding and commuting.
- Rigid Project 2 aluminium fork on Kona's tapered tube frame.
- Hydraulic disc brakes from Shimano for better stopping power and wet-weather performance.
- The larger chainrings and Shimano Sora road bike components show that this is a bike made for speed.
- Better wheel rims and a narrower saddle.
- Improved handlebars and pedals.
- Smart grey paintwork, enhanced by the graphics means that this is a bike that will get noticed.
So it can probably be seen that there is a bike for everybody in the Kona Dew range. Very competitive prices as well.
